Kevin Burnham Speaks at US Sailing’s Mount Gay Rum Series
Miami Beach, Florida (February 13, 2006) – As part of the US Sailing's Mount Gay Rum Speaker Series, Kevin Burnham captivated The Windjammers of the Chesapeake group with a detailed presentation on his thirty year 470 sailing career, culminating in a Gold Medal at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.  The presentation took place on Friday, February 10, 2006 at the Maritime Institute Training and Conference Center in Linthicum Heights, Maryland.

Joe Revek, Commodore of The Windjammers of the Chesapeake, said:

Hearing Kevin's humble beginning in sailing, the epiphany to become an Olympic gold medalist in the 470 was amazing! Then came 30 years of trials and setbacks, yet through it all was the human spirit of patience and perseverance. The story of the races, building up to the final race, had me cheering along with him as he crossed the finish line! A night of inspiration for anyone in any walk of life. Spectacular!

US SAILING's Mount Gay Rum Speaker Series was first created in 2005 as a grassroots, educational series delivering high quality seminars to sailors nationwide. The Series proved to be very successful in its first year with more than 1,500 sailors attending ten events. Details are currently being finalized to bring the Series to 18 different sailing organizations around country.

The Windjammers of the Chesapeake Inc. was formed in 1962 by a local group of dedicated sailors with a purpose "To maintain and operate a sailing yacht association for recreational, educational and social purposes." Many organizations of lasting value to the Chesapeake Bay had their genesis in the Windjammers of the Chesapeake, such as: The Chesapeake Bay Foundation, The Chesapeake Appreciation Days and The Oyster Recovery Partnership.  The Windjammers of the Chesapeake survives today primarily in the form of a winter lecture series providing lectures of interest to sailors during the winter months as well as a fall cruise weekend each year.
